Newlyn Fish Festival 2011

Newlyn Fish Festival – 21 this year!

Celebrate all things fishy on August 29th in one of Cornwall's most distinctive and
original fishing ports. Satisfy your appetite with the best seafood you can get whilst
enjoying great cooking demos, live entertainment or bidding at the seafood auction.
August Bank Holiday Monday sees the annual Cornish celebration of the sea, fishing
and seafood at the 21st Newlyn Fish Festival, where you will find more fish than you
can shake a mermaid’s tail at!
Cooking it in the Fish Market Kitchen will be a rolling programme of top local chefs:
Paul Ainsworth from No.6, Justin Ashton from the Lime Tree, Sanjay Kumar from
Slow Food Cornwall, Kier Meikle from the Navy Inn, Annie Sibert from My Fish
Kitchen and Robert Wright from Untitled.
Duncan and Sue Lucas from Passionate About Fish will introduce you to one of the
biggest displays of fish you’re ever likely to see and you can buy fish fresh, smoked
or cooked in dazzling variety of ways from the best of Cornish seafood merchants.
Plus a big welcome back to Dan The Fishman with his fish workshops for kids.
There will also be the Big Fish-Filleting Challenge featuring the unsung heroes of the
seafood industry – the backroom boys and girls who will be competing for the title of
Cornish Fishmonger of the Year 2011. And, of course, it wouldn’t be a Newlyn Fish
Festival without a couple of Robin Turner’s famous Newlyn fish auctions. This year,
Robin will be auctioning not only fish but also a traditional withy lobster pot which will
be made during the day on the North Pier by Mousehole pot maker David Cotton. So
come and bid for your supper (and the pot) and help to raise money for the Royal
National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen.
With two music stages and a Busker’s Corner hosted by Tros and Treys, there will
be one of the biggest line-ups of local bands and performers that you’ll find
anywhere on one day in Cornwall.
And new this year, is the Fish Tales Tent where you will be treated to the best of the
spoken word by the very best of local story-tellers and poets. The Tent will also
display many prints from the Newlyn School of Art generously lent by Penlee House
and Gallery.
Next to the Fish Tales Tent, Pam and Ron Hogg from the Newlyn Archive will show
you some of their display of old photos and artefacts showing the rich history of
On the water will be gig racing, lifeboats and fishing boats. Look out for the jet-skis
from the Cornish Jetskier Club who will be performing stunts, parades and rescue
demonstrations throughout the day, along with the current waterski freestyle British
champion Ant Burgess. And, at the other end of the spectrum, there will be a whole
fleet of luggers, some of which will taking part in a lugger rowing race in the
Bilbo the life-saving dog will be on the North Pier, and, around the harbour, watch
out for mayhem and madness from Trifle Gathering with actors from Miracle Theatre
as they perform their own distinctive and whacky brand of daring gymnastics.
Camborne Pondhoppers will have their display of model boats next to the RNLI
building, and, with bouncy castles, face-painting, wet-sponge throwing and a coconut
shy with a difference, there will be plenty of fun for kids, too, including the return of
the popular Fishy Trail.
The entire day will be filmed by our media partner, MyCornwall TV and it’s all in aid
of the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen. A great day out for everyone!
Entrance £5 adults. Under 16s free. Follow signs from the A30. Parking on Newlyn
Green or Newlyn Coombe.
The opening ceremony
The Newlyn Fish Festival gates open at 09:00 and close at 17:00 with last entrance

Paul Ainsworth from Number 6 in Padstow, will be officially opening the Festival on
the main stage at 10:00. The Ronnie Richards Memorial Fund will hand over a
defibrillator to Keith Dickson, Superintendent of the Riyal National Mission to Deep
Sea Fishermen, and which will be housed at the Fishermen’s Mission in Newlyn.

Newlyn Fish Festival – Weekend of Sail
Something special to see and join in over the Festival weekend.
A gathering of Cornwall’s old sailing fishing luggers moored in the Old Harbour,
Newlyn and showing their sails in Mounts Bay. These are the boats that caught
Cornwall’s fish before engines were invented. Join the spectacle and get a taste as
the boats enter the Old Harbour on August 27th, Saturday evening, and the crews
come ashore to sample delicious pilchards generously provided by Trelawney Fish
and specially barbecued by Sanjay Kumar from Slow Food Cornwall. Sanjay is
donating all proceeds to the RNMDSF.
On Sunday the 28th, the luggers will be off to sea for a day’s sailing around Mounts
Bay. You will be able to see them from all around the bay before returning back to
A Fun Fish Workshop for Kids
A fisherman for 20 years and one‐time lifeboatman and now a full‐time fishmonger,
there’s not much that Dan The Fishman doesn’t know about seafood. Come along and
share his enthusiasm and knowledge at the Newlyn Fish Festival where he will be running
a number of free workshops for 5 to 16 year olds (but he may stretch the age limit a bit!).
Learn not only how to recognise the different species but also how to handle, prepare and
cook them – oh, and you can eat them, of course! He will also have a tank of live lobsters
on show.
The workshops will begin on the hour and half hour from 9:30 with the last one at 4pm.
They will take place in the Fish Market ‐ and it’s all free!
You can join in the fun by emailing your name and preferred time slot to or texting it to 07518 603955 – or just turn up on the day.
Fish Tales Tent
All fish have tails, but do fish have tales? Come along to the harbour side of the Ice Works
and find out. In the Fish Tales Tent, you will hear many stories of the deep.
Be enthralled to the best of local story-tellers, poets and purveyors of the spoken
word. From John Wallis, Liz Harman, Angie Stoner, John Brolly, Martin Green and
many, many more in a rolling programme of tales and poems loosely based on the
sea, fish and fishing, and probably a whole lot more as well.
There will be two special slots for children’s stories at 11:00 and 14:00. So come to
the Fish Tales Tent and treat your ears to some of the best stories you’re likely to
hear this side of Davy Jones’ locker. (I bet he’s got a story or two …!)
the Old Harbour for a plate of a fish kedjeree, again prepared by Sanjay to the
accompaniment of music and dance from the traditional Cornish group Tros an
Treys. Come and enjoy the atmosphere and join in a special evening to remember.
Festival day itself will see the luggers move into the new harbour where you can
have a closer look. Go on board and get a feel for what a working life on one of
these unique boats must have been like.
In the afternoon, they will take part in a strenuous and very unique rowing event not
seen in Newlyn before. Few have seen these heavy boats being rowed, but rowed
they were before the days of engines and some still do. So watch them and give
them a cheer as the crews heave on their heavy sweeps.

Porthcurno Treen and Pednevounder Beaches

The beaches near Porthcurno in Southwest Cornwall must be amongst the best in Cornwall. The white sand and turquoise blue water really do make you think you are in an island paradise.

Picture of Porthcurno Treen and Pednvounder beaches

Access to Porthcurno beach is straightforward from the car park. At low tide you can walk / paddle to the adjacent beaches of Treen and Pednevounder, but at high tide you will not be able to return to Porthcurno, and have to scale the *very* steep and rocky path back up to the coastal path. Porthcurno is about 15 minutes off the A30, towards Lands End, there is a pay and display car park nearby, with a cafe and shop near the car park. The Minack theatre is a steep walk from the beach, but also has a shop and excellent cafe. For an ideal summers day out, pack a picnic or take a barbecue with you.

Map of porthcurno beach

Pednevounder beach is well known as a naturist beach, so don't be at all surprised, or offended if you see naked people sunbathing, walking, and swimming in the sea.

Mousehole Carnival 2011

Mousehole Carnival is on from Friday 23th August until Monday 15th.  For full details pick up a programme from the shops or car parks in the village.  During most afternoons there are activities for the children on the beach or in the legion if the rain persists. On Saturday evening down at the legion is musician Graham Hart, on Sunday there's a quiz in the Legion and the Shirts playing down at the ship Inn from 9pm. On Monday during the afternoon there are various art activities taking place,  and in the evening the excellent Boogaloo Dudes are playing – all who attended their set last year thoroughly enjoyed themselves. There's lots more on, like I said go get a programme.

Brad Pitt in Falmouth

Rumour has it that Brad Pitt is staying close to Falmouth for the filming of his latest film, "World war Z".  Apparently a boat has been coated in wax, to look like it's frozen, and will be heading out to sea today, from Falmouth Docks  ( 3/8/11) for filming to start.   Obviously security is going to be high, and people are advised not to try and get near to the boat.  A large area of Falmouth docks has been taken over by the film crew, and upto 500 locals have been retained as extras for the movie, giving a great boost to the local economy.

The film is based on a book by Max Brooks of the same title, in which a UN representative interviews survivors from the Zombie Wars. In the book the story begins in China, after a zombie bites a boy,  the infection spreads around the world, with catastrophic effect,  resulting in the virtual collapse of the human race,

The location of Brad Pitt is unknown,  we have it on good authority that he's staying in a house near the River Helford,  other people report that he's on a luxury yacht, moored off the Cornish coast..
